What is your company and the mission driving your work?

Anemo Labs was founded in 2025 with one question in mind – what if computers could smell? Three of the five senses have successfully been digitised – sight, hearing and touch.

Our mission is to unlock the diagnostic potential of smell. Research has shown that trained dogs can detect cancers from the scent of sweat, breath, or urine with remarkable accuracy. These bodily fluids are rich in chemical biomarkers, and provide information on the metabolic state of the body. We are developing an artificial electronic nose, and pairing it with our machine learning model to allow digital interpretation of these signals. We aim to create new tools for healthcare, allowing earlier detection, better monitoring and more accessible diagnostics.

What challenge or opportunity inspired the creation of your organisation?

The real eye-opener was seeing first-hand the gaps in cancer care – particularly with late or mis-diagnosis. It’s now established that trained dogs match and exceed our best diagnostic tool in detecting cancer simply by smell. We’ve done a lot of work in sensors and computer vision AI models. We’re digitizing olfaction to put this superpower in the hands of clinicians and patients.

What recent breakthrough, milestone, or project are you most excited about?

Our Olfactory AI models built on in-house training samples achieved an odor classification accuracy that surpassed a key human benchmark. We will publish our results and dataset soon.

What attracted you to this campus, and how does the environment support your work?

Basing our lab at Lab Ready at Drummond Street was an easy decision. Lab Ready offers all the equipment and space we need for our Research and Development, meaning that our research scientists and electronic engineers can work closely together. With access to central London facilities and a stimulating environment of like-minded founders and scientists ready to make scientific breakthroughs, Lab Ready is the perfect environment for an early-stage startup.

Where do you see your technology or product making the biggest impact?

We’re really excited about the opportunity for earlier diagnosis of diseases and improved healthcare. Our bodies release important, reliable signals every day. Today, all this data goes to waste.
